Dominik Lejman: Natural History

As I write these words, the shape of Dominik Lejman's exhibition in Atlas Sztuki is slowly crystallizing. In the texts published in the catalogue, the reader will not find much information about the artist's latest project. Nevertheless, for everyone involved in the preparation of this exhibition, it is obvious that it will be an interesting video painting of the artist. A very versatile artist, describing himself as a painter, whose works have so far been presented in many prominent galleries in the country and abroad.

I am pleased to recommend you to read a catalogue specially prepared on the occasion of the exhibition. I am pleased that the invitation to edit it was accepted by three outstanding art experts: Ryszard W. Kluszczyński, Jarosław Suchan and Tomasz Załuski. The result of this collaboration are two insightful texts on the work of Dominik Lejman and a record of an interesting conversation with the artist by Jarosław Suchan.

Ryszard W. Kluszczyński notes that "Lejman's painting, before it was even confronted in its own field with video, was already characterized by internal complexity, multifacetedness, polyphony of discourses. This effect, which is worth emphasizing, was achieved primarily through material and structural treatments, not thematic". Tomasz Załuski, writing about the work of Dominik Lejman, emphasizes that "the artist still perceives himself as a painter and stubbornly opposes attempts to simply count his activities into video art. His works can rather be classified as a hybrid category of "video painting", to the heterogeneous field of the use of video image in activities variously referring to painting issues - which is all the more justified as Lejman himself uses related terms "video", "video wallpaper" or "video wallpaper" to describe different types of his projects.
