Stanisław Władysław Reymont’s masterpiece, The Promised Land, rewritten by us in full—word for word, line for line.

In 1921, Władysław Reymont was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in a submission to the Swedish Academy. Those nominating the author of “The Peasants” presented his entire body of work. The procedure was laborious and bureaucratic. Amid the confusion, the manuscript of “The Promised Land” sent to the Academy went missing. For the people of Łódź, “The Promised Land” is more than a novel. On the bicentenary of industrial Łódź, we set out to create an extraordinary manuscript—one that would revive the myth of Łódź and give the city the impetus for development as dynamic in the future as it had been in the nineteenth century.
