La déchirure is French for a tear, but also a rupture; it refers both to matter and to the individual. It can describe a repeated action or an enduring state. In art, it is an attempt to articulate a lack of coherence, to notice edges moving apart, frayed shapes and blurred colours. In the French sound of the phrase la déchirure, we hear the onomatopoeic sound of paper tearing, fabric ripping and glass shattering. We pronounce the words with the hiss of exhaled air and a breath caught with difficulty.
