Oh elephant, – writes Zofia. – It's not easy for me to live without you anymore. At presentI live provisionally. I was on Freedom Square. He's starry, he releases himselfSuch long streets, very attractive, I got there a little - but too cold for longWandering and I would prefer with you. Poor slave. It must stink terribly in the summerIn Łódź. Now it is pleasantly exotic. Do you remember me? I kiss youVery much. Everyone has a husband and I don't. Zosia. For now, just after the war, Zofia Gutkowska - like her future husband - goes to Eibisch's studio at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts. He obtains discharge after the wedding, on June 30, 1949. Art education is complemented by stage studies with Karol Frycz, completed with a diploma on January 5, 1953. In the 1950s, practicing a profession is still a necessity for her - you have to live on something. Already during his studies, he collaborates with the famous Puppet and Actor Theatre "Groteska" in Krakow. Not only for her, designing dolls and decorations will turn out to be an excellent "niche" for the coming years of socialist realism, as well as an economical "lifebuoy" for the young couple.
After the wedding, the Nowosielskis live for half a year at al. Krasińskiego 32/4, in the studio of Jonasz Stern, who is on a scholarship in Paris. After his return, they return to Kantor's former studio in the outbuilding at ul. Batory 12. Meanwhile, a former colleague from the Kunstgewerbeschule Ali Bunsch has already settled in Łódź, from where he tempts the prospect of constant work on the set design in Puppet Theaters. Leaving Krakow is not easy, but Zofia Nowosielska decides to leave. Jerzy will soon follow her, and the 12 years spent in Łódź will prove to be a very interesting and fruitful stage of their biography.(...)
Although at the beginning nothing foreshadows it... From these very years the Nowosielskis' letters to each other have been preserved: full of care and anxiety for the common future and artistic plans. Full of living problems, but also full of tenderness. Young spouses write to each other in affectionate, only familiar language.
In April 1950, Jerzy officially registers with Łódź, but in practice he remains in turnouts - torn between Krakow, Łódź and the first work on polychromes "in the field". The situation is still uncertain, the lack of stability and life problems force various searches and difficult decisions. (Krystyna Czerni, Bat in the temple. How can you be sure that on the wall near the closet from the studio hangs a portrait of Zofia, seen by those circling the gallery during the inauguration of the Nowosielski year?
"Zosia sat in the classroom in front of me - recalls her school years Ewa Jurkiewicz - and at first I did not even notice that she had an inefficient hand after Heine-Medina. I only remember how suddenly something lit up, and the metal shone through the silk blouse, because she wore this hand stiffened on the rail and fastened with leather straps. But she always wrapped it, camouflaged it, knew how to position herself. You can see it in the pictures from the Kunstgewerbeschule, Zosia always stands sideways. (Ibid)
Do we have to remember everything, know everything? A good picture, even when it is an act, can envelop, obscure the irrelevant. You don't have to stand sideways at all.
