Snake Island

Not only the symbolic, but also the real, can fit on a postage stamp. On stamps we can record heroism and preserve gestures worth remembering. The trouble is that the Real assumes the dimensions of reality only briefly. It then shrinks to the size of a postage stamp, while everyday life flows on at its overwhelming scale.

The Ukrainian postal service has announced the result of its competition for a stamp commemorating the soldiers of Snake Island. 

Contrary to what maps show, Snake Island may be larger than Ukraine and Europe combined.
