We Are Setting to Work on the New Timeline Project and the Games of the Future at Atlas Sztuki
Like the proverbial dog to the hedgehog. As part of this project, we ask the world's famous people for five important dates from the last century.
For what? Probably to give a head for a moment (during the Games) about the world that awaits us in a hundred years. It is difficult to predict how the fate of our project will be further. We are going to collect dates, as well as books, such as movie scenes on 5inLodz, as well as photos describing the World of Cities on 6inLodz.pl.
It's the middle of August, so let's collect five dates from the last days. Is it possible to read anything from them?
1 – Let's start with the August street. Theoretically, we know very well that the street is a complex structure, woven from a whole series of completely different systems of signs and symbols.
This time we are not talking about the Łódź Textile. We'll whisper a word about her next time.
Imagine: we are going to Novgorod, because here it is easy to see for yourself to what extent something important from one perspective turns into something secondary from another. Such walks have a positive impact not only on specialists in the field of sociology of cities and urban planners. They are useful for anyone who intends to use and deal with common space, design sign systems, deliberate on a divergent perspective of memory.
2 - A religious holiday, a Marian holiday celebrated on August 15, has an exceptionally rich and long tradition in the cultures of many countries. As the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it is set in the old eastern tradition of the Orthodox feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (gr. Κοίμησις [“Koimesis”]). Its origins can already be found in early Christian writers from the 2nd century AD, such as Meliton of Sardes (gr. Μελίτων Σάρδεων). In Poland, thanks to the Battle of Warsaw, called the Miracle on the Vistula, from August 1920, and the effective containment of the Red Army advancing on the capital, this holiday is also of an obvious military and historical character. Iconographically, this is a certain problem, because it is difficult to find representations of Mary the Cavalier.
The tradition of the holidays is always worth enriching. Remembering the valor of those who saved the existence of the Second Republic of Poland in the suburbs of Warsaw and respecting purely religious reflection, it may be possible to fit in today's celebration the broad, sincere smile of the mount on which Maria goes to Egypt on a 15th-century polyptych from the collection of the National Museum in Krakow. In addition to strong, personal faith and uhlan fantasy, it is worth adding to our - festive - idea of ourselves the memory of charges and journeys on modest mounts. The one from the aforementioned Gothic painting has such a philosophical expression of his own thoughts on the surface that everyone in the rush of charge will be with it to face. Imagine how Witold Gombrowicz would describe the charge of a squadron of similar steeds.
3 – Last-minute events, last week exactly, it is worth paying attention to Suwałki. From Friday the 16th to Sunday the August 18th, the festival was held there for the fourth time "Wajda again". The artistic director of the event is Andrzej Pągowski, which guarantees a lively pace and a clear contrast between individual programme proposals.
We really, really need some event that will start the process of regaining sovereignty over our own attention, over the decision that we carefully look at what we are not interested in. It seems impossible to return to the circulation of images, situations and information that filled the culture from the time of Wajda and other creators of the Polish film school or poster. It is difficult to expect such a precise, such a conscious articulation of the staff in today's attention horizon, which is overworn by "the latest" stimuli, opinions, posts, etc.
Let's watch old movies, posters, who knows, maybe it only seems to us that there is no way to return to the sense of one's own cognitive autonomy in the face of what catches our eyes. We must constantly try.
