Will ‘Two (Young) Married Women’ Take Part in the 2025 Presidential Election?
Unknown. What is known today is the fact that Andrzej Wróblewski was a great painter. We are not surprised that in the heart of Venice, in the Procuratie Vecchie space, in St. Mark's Square, an exhibition of this artist was presented. This is one of two Polish exhibitions for 60. International Art Exhibition in Venice. The main exhibition was curated by Brazilian Adriano Pedrosa, artistic director of the Sao Paulo Museum of Art (MASP).
"Andrzej Wróblewski is our great legend and we dream that he will become if not a legend for everyone, then at least a recognizable figure on the international art scene. There is no guarantee that it will succeed," said Joanna Mytkowska, head of the Warsaw Museum of Modern Art, in an interview with Agnieszka Kowalska, held a long time ago in 2012, on the occasion of an international seminar dedicated to the life and work of the artist.
Andrzej Wróblewski was a great painter. An instinctive painter who was able to emphasize, contrast, show the incomprehensible accuracy of observations so that everyone had to notice and understand the problem. Sharp contrasts, mutually exclusive elections were a feature of the post-war reality in Poland. It could be said that it was a very "pictorive" period in Polish history. It was a picturesqueness that is used exceptionally willingly in this part of Europe History, a picturesqueness with a rusty-bloody colour range (important for capists).
"We want to paint a picture that would help distinguish good from evil," wrote Wróblewski, assuming in 1948 Self-Education Group. Who wouldn't want to?
From 1949 comes a painting showing the "historical" division (then it was added - Class division). The division into the right and the wrong. On their own and the latter, not yet alien, but already incomprehensible.
It is a clear picture, "dialectically correct", as it was said at the time.
It is a picture far from executive perfection.
And yet, as a whole, it attracts the eye, fascinates, means. Apparently, art is all about that.
It is worth looking at good images, they can always contrast the situation of choice. Even if we don't know whether we choose good or evil, we can clearly see the difference. The rest is at the control of instinct.
Politics has recently been using the topic in such a monstrous way Gender, that it is difficult not to feel a slight anxiety when recalling the title of the 1949 painting, "Two married women". You can see that together, in one picture, but in one relationship? ¡No pass! Dialectically excluded.
We don't know if Wróblewski would be happy if some excited angel painted him a panorama of Poland 2024.
60. The International Art Exhibition in Venice, whose slogan is "Foreigners are everywhere", is to run from April 20 to November 24, 2024. In addition, in the Polish Pavilion, you will be able to see the Polish-Ukrainian project "Repeat after me II" of the Open Group collective.
