What Can Be Seen in Poland on the Morning of 10 November 2022?
The national colours: greys, drizzle and rain. But tomorrow—tomorrow! Once again, enthusiastic crowds will welcome Grandpa at the station. The drizzle is discouraging, but one need only increase the resolution slightly and the comic-book convention of clear outlines and simple stories will disintegrate into a multiverse of lines, contours and fragments that do not fit together at all, scattered like the dots of a halftone that can add colour to a frame, but cannot construct it.
Nonsense! A drizzle of details. We want to—and will—live happily along in one comic book or another. Without one, both we and our autonomous cars and equally autonomous partners will lose our way.
Let us at least try to ensure that everyone can move as they wish. On the public roads of the metropolises of imagination, one may speed along aboard the locomotive of history or on a skateboard.
10 November is said to mark the anniversary of Piłsudski’s arrival in Warsaw in 1918, as well as International Hedgehog Day. So far, even the well-funded specialists at the Institute of National Remembrance have found no lead that would explain this coincidence. We must rummage for ourselves, sharpening the image in defiance of halftones printed without restraint. There is no point in being irritated that the details do not fit the stories repeated over and over. Better to wonder what would happen—which comic book we would awaken in tomorrow—if the heroes of 10 November, the Marshal and the Hedgehog, exchanged means of transport.
