It’s worth stating clearly from the start that this festival is akin to the theater, which Grotowski called a degenerated ritual, degenerated because in ancient rituals there were no spectators, only participants.

This year, you can go straight from the festival to another dark place: to the cinema (once there were cinemas in Łódź…). Go see “Doppelgänger. The Double” by Jan Holoubek.

In such a city, which itself does not know who it is, who it wants to be, when it grows up like older cities, it’s not a bad idea. You may suddenly open your eyes like a Greek epoptes, Łódź is not a city, it is, in Łódź’s own words, Doppelgänger der Stadt. Nothing certain, nothing tangible, rather a phantasmagoria of flashes and projections. A quite successful model of modernity, get accustomed.

The city has no rhythm. It has too many, mutually drowning each other out. We like this. We also like it, even when we do not think of settling in an archaic, rural calendar of the seasons. It seems to amuse us,

but what if

it was possible

in a city way,

the Łódź way,

from sheer will,

to create an unmissable festival,

a festival as obvious as the harvest festival, why not.

The idea that the festival and light go together is not new. The most famous, dating back to the middle of the second millennium BC and celebrated annually in September at least until the 5th century AD, the Eleusinian Mysteries changed those who participated in them, opened their eyes, led to seeing something. The initiate was brought through rituals to the highest degree of initiation, which was epopteia – seeing, contemplation. The initiate of the mysteries changed from a mystes with eyes tied to an epoptes, the viewer, the one who sees “how it really is”. The mysteries in Eleusis in honor of Demeter were dark and remain dark for researchers, who get lost and argue about the course and meaning of the mysterious initiation. We do not know what was their greatest, silently shown, unspeakable in any language (ἄρρητος) secret. Often, it is said that it was simply an ear of grain, just right for the mentioned harvest.

The city as “who knows what” perfectly fits the mysterious arretos. It cannot be described, spoken, transcribed in its entirety. The language of the city will not encompass it, the city can exist outside of language, just as it happens to us. From this kinship of dark corners comes such easy familiarity with the City. Some like it, others fear it, just like during the mysteries.

These Łódź ones, openly dedicated to what language cannot capture – light and movement – may succeed.

Isn’t this kind of transformation displayed on the facades of Łódź?
